Ludum Dare 26: Minimalism! and Kongregate Badges >:(
My game from the latest Ludum Dare: MATAR!
Check it out and, if you submitted as well, please rate & comment!
This Ludum Dare went somewhat smoothly (aside from an error with a teleport script that took 45 minutes to figure out that I solved by removing one word). But I didn’t quite take 48 hours on this Ludum Dare…

You see, my school was having prom on the same weekend as Ludum Dare, and there wasn’t really any backing out of either.
So my original plan was to collaborate with a classmate who also has some experience with Unity so we can try to at least make the 72 hour jam deadline. So we get together on Google hangouts and shoot ideas at eachother on what we can make given my time constraint. But unfortunately we overestimated leadership skills, and on top of that, my collaborator’s internet dropped for the next like, day. I didn’t have enough instruction to go on with the project we were discussing, so that kinda fell flat. But luckily, I had my own idea that wouldn’t take long at all, so I started on that. At this point, I’m solo again.
So I start on some art for the game and I manage to texture and rig a model and create its ragdoll. I laugh at it for a few minutes and leave for prom (it was fun, btw). I then go to my friends house, lugging my laptop and a nice 20 inch secondary monitor to continue jamming while my pal gamed away on his Alienware dare I say, laptop (you shouldnt try to put that thing on your lap).
As for my would be collaborator’s game, all was going well for him until the very last few hours of the Jam, when Unity glitched and many of his prefabs went wonky. He unfortunately didnt meet the deadline because of this glitch D: BUT he is still gonna finish the project because, come on, ya just gotta.

Back to my project, I did 100% of the scripting on sunday alone (not that surprising, as the game is really simple) and when it comes down to it, I probably only used 14 or 15 hours of our allotted 48 (seeing as I slept somewhat well, too).
And the end result? MATAR!! My ridiculous game of ultra violence that I’m actually glad I made. Please take a look if you are not put off by ultra (but not over the top) violence and a bit of sadism.
Check this guy’s review of it:

And you know what kinda makes me mad? KONGREGATE BADGES well, implementing them into your game, really
From what I read, they leave you no instruction on how to implement them, and whether you actually get them on your game is kinda based on chance, with the odds not in your favor. And you need a rating of like, 3.85 or higher, and some people don’t even get badges then.
It kinda crushed my hopes when I realized that my game only has a rating of 3.41. Didn’t expect such a rating given the feedback I’ve gotten of the game, but maybe Kongregate is just weird like that.
Thanks for bearing through this long ramble! More ramblings here.

Deconstructeam: Gods Will Be Watching

deconstructeam:

We didn’t expect this. Gods Will Be Watching was our little minimalistic puzzle game for Ludum Dare 26, and we were happy with it, but, seeing it appearing it all over the internet, and receiving more than 10.000 plays per day was totally unexpected.

We are overwhelmed. Took us several days to recover from the 72 hours effort and being able to face all of the blog posts, tweets, mails, gameplays at youtube… we need to thank so many people!!!!

Here’s a selection of GWBW‘s unbelievable (at least for us) journey on the press:

Gods Will Be Watching Is The Saddest Survival Sim (Rock Paper Shotgun)

A Survival Sim That (Mostly) Takes Place On A Single Screen (Kotaku)

Gods Will Be Watching is a bleak, beautiful free survival sim (Eurogamer.net)

Read more in our website!

That’s a lotta press! Good job guys!

martyisnothere:

I’ve been working on shaders a bit today.  Without a Unity pro license, I can’t have cast shadows, so I’m trying to do something that doesn’t have much shading but can still break up the shapes.
There are three parts to this.  A color which tints the object to match the environment’s lighting.  A rim light that isn’t actually cast by a light so that it just follows the camera around.  And some very subtle shading on the undersides of the objects.
I’ll have a better idea of how well this works once I get a finished character and environment done.

Feesh and Businessman
I’m making an attempt at porting my game Feesh to Android/iOS.
It produced 8863 errors.
New personal record!
Well I managed to hack through most of them, so now I just have to implement touch controls and optimize and whatever else you have to do to make a mobile game.
As for Businessman, here’s the bar that the demo shall take place in:

Now here’s the same bar, but with a bunch of chairs in it:

yes
and here’s the men’s bathroom:

As I said in a previous post, I still haven’t fleshed out a plot, but one of the “neat” scenarios I already have planned out and will take place in those screenshots.
I have a lot of scripts to write, because the only thing that works so far are the doors. Trust me, they’re neat.
Welp that’s my stuff for now; I’ll always be rambling on twitter here.

Businessman DevLog
So I’ve been trying to keep up with a regularly scheduled Developer’s log and, well..you can see how well I’ve been doing that.
Anyways, here’s a post of my most recent project, Businessman. I have mostly visuals to show so far. The only real scripting I did was for rudimentary controls and a ‘system’ so that when you walk under something, it becomes transparent so that you can still see yourself.
Quite useful.
So this shall be a stealth action game; haven’t thought up much of a plot, but I have thought up many neat scenarios. No idea how I’m going to link them together quite yet…
BUT I seem to be getting good feedback on the visual style on twitter, which is nice :D (and motivational).
The semi-orthogonal effect is achieved by making the field of view reeally low and scooting the camera way the hell back. I always tweak the scene’s Ambient Light (very important for making the scene look like it’s not from a game from the 90’s) and I add a lens flare every now and then. Because of the low field of view, the flares are gonna be hellas bright, so I usually adjust the brightness and/or the color. And that’s how I achieve the look! Oh, and don’t forget lightmaps.
Here’s an editor view:
cool.
Much thanks for reading, unless you didn’t, and just are reading this last line break. If that’s the case, shame on you. Who reads tumblr posts like that anyways? gosh
